– Establishing an LC-MS method for microcystins incl. molecular networking

Microcystins are toxic cyclic peptides produced by cyanobacteria (freshwater algae) can cause gastroenteritis, skin reactions, liver damage or even death after accidental uptake with freshwater. Especially cases of intoxication in dogs after contact with lakes showing algal bloom are regularly reported.
Analytical methods for the determination of microcystins in water and different animal tissues are required for the confirmation of disease and potential initiation of mitigation measures.
This project had therefore the aim of establishing a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method for the simultaneous analysis of frequently occurring microcystins and structurally-related nodularins.
